How to study competitor ads without copying them

Ad libraries are public. Used properly they tell you what is working; used lazily they turn your brand into a worse version of someone else’s.

Meta and TikTok both publish every ad currently running. So does Google. This is legitimate, public research, the only way to do it badly is to open a competitor’s creative and rebuild it with your logo.

What to actually look for

  • How long an ad has been live. Anything running over a month is paying for itself.
  • Which claim leads. Price, speed, ingredient, guarantee, the first line tells you their bet.
  • What the offer structure is. Bundles, first-order discount, free returns.
  • What they never say. The gaps are where your positioning lives.

Turn observations into hypotheses

Write what you saw as a sentence you can test: "Three of the four leaders lead with delivery speed, nobody leads with the returns policy, test returns as the hook." That sentence is yours. The screenshot is not.

Copy the reasoning, never the artwork. The artwork was built for someone else’s brand and their customers already know it.

Do this once a month, not once a day. Watching competitors daily is how brands end up making the same ad as everyone else, six weeks later.
